Oh Pep! will make their much anticipated debut at The Melbourne Folk Club alongside indie-folkers Open Swimmer.

Winners of the 2014 Folk Alliance Australia Youth Performer of the Year award, and nominated for Folk Album of the year at the Music Victoria Awards, Oh Pep! have been going from strength to strength in recent times, releasing intelligent and catchy folk music inspired by the likes of Cake, Bach, Wilco & John Hartford.

Liz Stringer says it right… “I was instantly struck by Oh Pep!’s fierce musicality and their tightness as a band. They consistently combine stirring melodies and stories to produce songs that have stayed with me since the first listen and remain representative of everything I like about music. An exciting and warmly welcomed addition to Melbourne’s live music scene.”

Deftly migrating from ramshackle, junkyard beats to wistful folk, Open Swimmer skirts the edges of intellectual pop without ever falling in. In the title track from their debut album Canyon, songwriter Ben TD invites us to “imagine you’re standing at the edge of the canyon of all canyons”. With our toes at the brink of an impossible precipice, he half-asks, half-dares, “Would you relax and let go?” This surrender to the expanse saturates Open Swimmer’s music. The band consists of some of Melbourne’s most admired indie alumni, Bec Rigby (The Harpoons), Chris Bolton (Seagull), Aaron Silver (Frankolin) and Peter Emptage (Sweets; Hello Satellites), together creating latticeworks of melody and found sounds that artfully frame the unvarnished charm of Ben’s song-craft.
